What are the people of the Twin Cities saying on Twitter?
The Twin Cities river covered Minneapolis and St. Paul. Its nav credited a post titled, going by its address, "launching twincitiestwitter in three hours", which suggests how little setup a new river took once the first one worked.
The capture from September 9, 2009 shows 37 accounts and a local character that is easy to spot. Sports feeds for the Vikings, the Twins, the Gophers and the Timberwolves sat next to news feeds, MinnPost and the Pioneer Press, and residents. The median account had 975 followers. The 100 tweets took about three hours to arrive on a weekday afternoon.
Taken together with Berkeley, the place rivers point at something Twitter itself was slow to offer: a way to read a city rather than a set of friends. Location features and local trends came later. In 2009 a hand-picked list of accounts, printed as a table, did the job.
